GreyOut
Chrome Extension · Manifest V3 · JavaScript · 2026
A Manifest V3 Chrome extension that masks all visible text on any web page with clean grey "wireframe" blocks. It's designed for safe screen sharing, demos, documentation, and screenshots.
It uses universal glyph substitution so nothing leaks, and it even reaches text inside encapsulated Shadow DOM controls without modifying the host page code.
How it works
The extension uses four core browser primitives to be fast and leak-free. A single unscoped rule re-renders every glyph as a solid block using an embedded "Redacted" WOFF2 font. This ensures zero layout shift since the blocks keep the exact width and line-wrap of the original text.
Styles are injected directly into the light DOM and into every shadow root using chrome.dom.openOrClosedShadowRoot(), running entirely in the isolated world without tampering with the main page context.
